SPAR Craic 10K
13 February 2015
Belfast’s first urban 10K run takes place at 9am on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March 2015, and the exciting route will link West and East Belfast, while taking in Belfast’s Cathedral and Titanic Quarters.
The SPAR Craic 10K is one of the latest high profile events supported by Northern Ireland’s number one local convenience retailer. SPAR, who are title sponsor proudly have over 300 stores located at the heart of local communities.
Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at Henderson Group, owners of the SPAR franchise in Northern Ireland commented on the sponsorship,
“We are delighted for SPAR to be supporting the first ever urban 10K run in Belfast City Centre. We are confident that this unique and fun event will be well supported by not only running enthusiasts but lots of families and young people who can take this challenge on at their own pace.
“The SPAR Craic 10K is focused just as much on community spirit as it is on promoting active and healthy lifestyles. SPAR stores throughout Northern Ireland supply a wide range of fresh healthy locally sourced produce, perfect for participants who are in training and want to prepare well-balanced healthy meals. We are proud to be associated with this exciting event and would like to encourage as many people to take part and stay active.”
Organisers of the cross-community event hope as many families as possible take part, beginning their St Patrick’s Day celebrations in a healthy and worthy way, before joining the civic celebrations in the city centre afterwards. Every registered runner in the SPAR Craic 10K will also be helping the final fundraising push for the Northern Ireland Hospice’s rebuild of Somerton House. The organisation, which is the official event charity partner, are currently building a new adult Hospice facility at Somerton House in Belfast that will meet the end of life care needs of the next generation. It is hoped this new facility will be open and operational in late 2015.
All entrants to the SPAR Craic 10K will receive SPAR goodies, a commemorative T-shirt from O’Neills, a ‘goodie’ bag, a bottle of Tipperary Water, a banana provided by Total Produce, as well as a voucher for a pint of Clonmel 1650 or a non-alcoholic Becks. All finishers will receive a medal.
The 17th March comes at a perfect time in the training schedule for those preparing for the SPAR 26th Omagh Half Marathon later that month or the 2015 Belfast City Marathon in May. It will also provide a challenging step up in distance for local Parkrunners.
South Belfast MLA Máirtin Ó Muilleoir, a keen runner himself, is part of the organising committee.
“Increasingly, where there are great St Patrick Day celebrations, there are fun runs as well,” said Máirtin.
“That's what I found when I travelled to St Louis, Missouri, where 300,000 take part in the St Patrick's Parade and 13,000 in the morning fun run.
“The SPAR Craic 10K will allow the people of Belfast to celebrate St Patrick's in a fun, healthy way before they enjoy the parade and party in Custom House Square. There is no better way to unite and build Belfast than by taking it to the streets.”
